CYCLE NHE’ERY • AYVU PARÁ
AYVU PARÁ – speech drawings – is an online cycle led by Carlos Papá and guests on the meanings of various words in the Guarani language.
The common thread is Nhe'ërÿ, and the cycle. As well as notebooks and other complementary materials, it consists of 13 short film-lessons, made available with English subtitles every Wednesday at 6pm on our YouTube channel, in partnership with the .Xow.rumi
Nhe'ërÿ, where the spirits bathe, is how the Guarani name the territory that is usually called the Atlantic Forest, a place sustained by water, Y, inhabited by ijás, owners of the beings and responsible for trees, animals and all the elements of nature.
The cycle, in partnership with the Guarani Mbya Arandu Porã Living School and the Museum of Indigenous Cultures, was recorded during in-person meetings that took place in June 2023 at the same museum in São Paulo.
In these gatherings, in addition to recorded conversations, seven artists from the Escola Viva Guarani Mbya Arandu Porã painted canvases depicting the Nhe’ërÿ from before the colonial invasion and the remaining Nhe’ërÿ in the place names of São Paulo city. The canvases created during this process were part of the exhibition LONG LIVE THE LIVING SCHOOLS, hosted by Selvagem at Casa França-Brasil in Rio de Janeiro, from December 2023 to January 2024.
